Chapter 4: A Quiet Sanctuary

Recognizing that the public lobby was no place for such a profound reunion, Julian guided Clara and Leo toward his private residence on the top floor of the building. The penthouse was spacious, filled with minimalist furniture and cool gray tones—a living space designed by a man who expected no one else to share it.
Clara set Leo down on the plush cream-colored rug. The toddler immediately began crawling toward a low wooden coffee table, fascinated by the reflection of the city lights in the glass.
Julian quickly moved around the room, clearing away sharp objects and glass coasters with an awkward, eager energy that made Clara’s lips twitch with the faint ghost of a smile.
"I'm sorry," Julian said, pausing with a handful of crystal paperweights. "I haven't... I don't have anything here for a child."
"He doesn't need much," Clara said, sitting on the edge of the sofa. "Just space to explore."
Julian set the items on a high shelf and sat on the floor near Leo, keeping a safe distance so as not to overwhelm the boy. He watched Leo’s small hands patting the carpet, every small movement filling him with a sense of wonder he had never experienced in any boardroom.

"How did you survive?" Julian asked softly, turning his gaze toward Clara. "On your own, with a newborn?"
Clara looked out the floor-to-ceiling windows at the sprawling city below. "My sister helped when she could. I worked from home, doing design consulting late at night while he slept. It was hard, Julian. There were nights I didn't know if I could keep the apartment. But every time I looked at him, I knew I couldn't give up."
