Chapter 11: First Steps Together
That evening, the cottage was filled with the warm scent of wood smoke and roasted vegetables. A small fire crackled in the stone hearth, casting an amber glow over the cozy living room.
Leo sat on the rug between Julian and Clara, playing with a set of wooden stacking rings. He carefully placed a blue ring onto the center peg, then looked up at Julian for approval.
"Good job, Leo," Julian cheered softly, clapping his hands. "Look at that."
Encouraged by the praise, Leo placed his hands on the floor and slowly pushed himself up into a standing position. He wobbled slightly, his tiny arms balancing in the air as he took a tentative step toward Julian.
Julian’s breath caught in his throat. He held his hands out, hovering an inch away from the boy, ready to catch him if he fell, but allowing him the space to find his own balance.
One step. Two steps. Three steps.
Leo tumbled forward into Julian’s waiting chest, letting out a bright, ringing laugh that filled the small room. Julian wrapped his arms around the boy, holding him close as tears of joy wet his eyes.
Clara watched them from the sofa, her heart overflowing with a warmth she thought she had lost forever. She reached down, placing her hand over Julian’s shoulder, completing the circle.

"He took his first steps with you," Clara said softly, her voice thick with emotion.
"No," Julian murmured, looking up at her with profound gratitude. "He took them with both of us. We're walking together now."
