Chapter 8 - The Price of Treason

The wail of multiple sirens suddenly pierced the storm outside, echoing down the long, winding drive of the Vanderbilt estate. Arthur’s calculation had been flawless. The media and the police had not been summoned by Clara or Christian; they had been summoned by Arthur himself the moment the ballroom lights went out.

"He played both sides," Christian muttered, his tactical instincts immediately assessing the ambush. He spoke into his radio: "Team B, what’s the status of the northern perimeter?"

"Surrounded, boss," the radio crackled with static and sirens. "State police and federal marshals have the driveway blocked. If we draw weapons, it’s a massacre."

Eleanor Vanderbilt rushed toward Arthur, dropping to her knees at her father-in-law's feet. "Arthur! You promised me Julian would be shielded! You promised this scandal would die with the girl!"

Arthur looked down at Eleanor with utter disdain. "Julian is weak, Eleanor. He spent six months ignoring the wounds on his fiancee's body because he was too terrified to question where his inheritance came from. A man who refuses to see blood on his own doorstep is no Vanderbilt."

Julian stumbled forward, looking at his hands, then at Clara’s torn gown, and finally at the grandfather he had idolized since childhood. A suffocating wave of nausea hit him. Every gift, every trust fund payout, every luxury had been soaked in violence he had willfully ignored.

"You touched her," Julian whispered, his voice cracking into a furious, guttural cry. "You kept her locked down there! You did this to her!"

"I did what was necessary to preserve fifty billion dollars in sovereign contracts," Arthur said ruthlessly. "And you, Julian, are going to take the blame for the fire, the assault, and the corporate espionage. A broken heart makes a marvelous defense for temporary insanity."

Arthur aimed the obsidian tip of his cane at Julian. Before anyone could react, Clara lunged. Ignoring the agonizing tear in her back, she threw herself directly into Arthur's knees, tackling the patriarch to the marble floor just as a disguised dart hissed through the air where Julian had been standing.
