Chapter 14 - The Severed Cord

Clara looked at Julian as if he were a complete stranger whose language she could no longer comprehend.

"Forget?" Clara whispered, stepping slowly toward him on the storm-lashed dock. "Forget the months you pretended not to hear me screaming from the basement? Forget that your grandfather had my mother poisoned so he could leverage me into this family?"

Julian backed up against the railing of the boat, shaking his head furiously. "That’s not true... Grandfather wouldn't—"

"Read it!" Clara screamed, throwing the open ledger at his chest. The heavy leather pages struck his coat and fell to the wet planks. "Read how much my mother was worth to your family! Twelve thousand dollars in hospital bills, Julian! That was the price of my life!"

Julian looked down at the open page under the flickering harbor light. His eyes darted across his grandfather's handwriting, seeing his own father's signature validating the asset acquisition. The reality struck him with the force of a freight train. His entire existence, his wealth, his refined education—it was all a butcher's shop built on systemic predation.

"I... I didn't know," Julian sobbed, falling to his knees on the wet dock, clutching his head in despair. "Clara, I swear to God I didn't know."

"Ignorance was your luxury, Julian," Clara said, stepping past him onto the boat. She grabbed the ignition keys hanging from the console, turning the twin marine engines over with a deep, roaring growl. "And your luxury just ran out."

Julian looked up through the rain, reaching out a trembling hand toward the boat. "Clara, please! Don't leave me here! They’ll kill me! If Grandfather finds out I failed, he’ll destroy me!"

Clara untied the thick mooring rope with one swift jerk, casting the vessel adrift into the violent black water. She stood at the helm, the engine vibrating beneath her feet, looking down at Julian as the distance between them widened with the tide.

"Then destroy him first," Clara said.

A loud explosion erupted at the top of the cliff. The safehouse burst into a magnificent ball of orange flame against the black sky. Clara slammed the throttle forward, cutting through the crashing ocean waves into the dark horizon, leaving Julian stranded alone on the docks as the sound of approaching sirens closed in on the cliffside.
