Chapter 4 - The Wolves at the Door

The arrival of armed men in tactical gear silenced the room entirely. They did not wear private security badges, nor did they bear the insignificance of local authorities. Their gear was professional, black, and marked only by a stylized silver crest—the insignia of the Sterling Syndicate, the Vanderbilt family’s oldest and most ruthless financial adversary.
At the front walked Christian Sterling. In his mid-thirties, tall, with razor-sharp facial features and an immaculate charcoal trench coat, Christian looked less like an intruder and more like an executioner attending a scheduled banquet.
"Pardon the interruption, Evelyn," Christian said, ignoring the dozens of cowering billionaires and walking casually down the center aisle. "I received an invitation to the unveiling of the century, and it seems I arrived just in time for the curtain call."
Eleanor Vanderbilt rushed forward, her aristocratic facade fully dismantled. "Christian! This is private property! How dare you trespass into my home!"
"Trespass?" Christian smiled thinly, stopping right before the raised dais. He gestured to Clara, who was stepping out from the shadows of the oak pedestal, her face pale but resolute. "Your future daughter-in-law contacted my offices three days ago, Eleanor. She deposited a duplicate of a certain forensic audit into an offshore escrow account. If anything happens to her tonight, the files automatically transfer to the Department of Justice."
Julian staggered toward Clara, his eyes begging for answers. "Clara... you went to Christian? To our rivals? Why?"
Clara looked at Julian with genuine pity. "Because your family didn't just hurt me, Julian. They traded my life to pay off the syndicate's debts. And they used Blackwood Manor to hide the bodies of everyone else who found out."
Julian turned sharply toward his uncle Richard and his mother Eleanor. "What is she talking about?!"

Richard didn't answer. Instead, his hand slid quietly beneath his lapel, drawing a concealed ceramic pistol and aiming it straight at Clara’s heart.
