Chapter 11 - The Web of Bounties

Clara watched the television screen in chilling silence. Julian looked like a ghost forced to read his own eulogy. Behind him, Eleanor smiled a cold, practiced smile of aristocratic sorrow for the cameras, wiping a non-existent tear from beneath her diamond earrings.

"They turned you into the villain," Christian remarked, his tone dangerously calm. "A ten-million-dollar bounty means every dirty contractor, rogue bail agent, and syndicate turncoat will be tearing the coast apart to find you."

"Julian is doing what he always does," Clara said, her knuckles turning white around the leather book. "Surviving on instructions."

"He looks terrified," Christian pointed out.

"He's terrified of losing his seat at the table," Clara retorted, opening the leather journal. The pages were filled with meticulous, handwritten notes in Arthur’s immaculate cursive script. Dates, offshore bank codes, coordinates, and lists of names followed by single, chilling red checkmarks.

Clara stopped at a page dated five years ago. Her breath hitched in her throat. Under a heading labeled Acquisitions - Asset Class C, she found her own maiden name, followed by her mother's death date and the specific hospital where her mother had died of supposed natural causes.

Beneath the entry was a single sentence: Debt leveraged successfully; subject brought to Vanderbilt territory under scholarship pretense.

Clara’s world tilted on its axis. Her scholarship to the prestigious academy where she had met Julian wasn't a miraculous stroke of luck. Her entire adult life, her relationship with Julian, her presence in that family—it had all been engineered from the day her mother died.

"Christian," Clara whispered, her voice shaking with a terrifying blend of horror and murderous rage. "They didn't just hurt me in that cellar. They murdered my mother to get me here."

Before Christian could read the passage over her shoulder, the glass wall of the cliffside retreat shattered in an explosive hail of high-caliber sniper fire.
