Chapter 6 - The Foundation Fractures

"Out! Everybody out!" Christian’s voice cut through the chaos with sudden, frantic urgency. He recognized the mechanical frequency instantly. "Evacuate the north wing immediately!"
The high-society crowd needed no second invitation. Dignitaries, heiresses, and CEOs shoved past one another, kicking off high heels and abandoning millions in jewels as they surged toward the heavy oak exit doors into the torrential rain outside. Julian stood frozen, staring at the floor vibrating beneath his polished shoes.
"Julian, move!" Clara screamed, fighting against Christian's restraining hand. Despite the betrayal, despite the months of silence while he ignored her cries, she could not watch him die.
Eleanor grabbed Julian by his tuxedo lapels, her fingernails digging through the cloth as she dragged him forcefully toward the service exit behind the bar. "He knew this day might come! Julian, move your feet or you die for a peasant girl's vendetta!"
A deafening blast ripped through the floor beneath the grand orchestra stage. The concussion blew marble tiles into jagged shrapnel and sent a shockwave that threw Clara and Christian against the reinforced back wall. Smoke, gray and thick with sulfur and pulverized drywall, billowed into the cavernous hall.
Through the haze, Clara coughed violently, her back screaming with agonizing pain as she struck the stone. She looked up through the smoke-filled air. The grand dais was obliterated, opening a gaping, blackened chasm into the private sub-basements below the estate—levels that never appeared on any official architectural blueprint.
Christian pulled Clara to her feet, coughing, his weapon drawn. "The entrance to Blackwood's private archives," he murmured grimly, peering into the smoking crater. "They weren't trying to kill us. Richard was trying to incinerate the evidence."

Clara stared down into the subterranean darkness below. Through the settling smoke, among the twisted rebar and scorched files, she saw a heavy vault door blown ajar. And stepping out from the fiery depths of the destroyed cellar, completely unscathed, was a figure everyone believed had died ten years ago.
