Chapter 2 - The Architect in the Shadows

The man stepping from the velvet curtains was Marcus Vance, Julian’s elder half-brother and the ruthless chief legal counsel for Vanderbilt Holdings. Unlike Julian, Marcus possessed no fragile romanticism. His cold, slate-gray eyes scanned the room, instantly calculating financial liability and reputational catastrophe. He pocketed his phone and raised his hand toward the security guards stationed at the arched double doors.
"Cut the ballroom feed," Marcus ordered in a voice devoid of panic. "Secure every entrance. Confiscate all recording devices. Anyone attempting to leak footage will find themselves tied up in non-disclosure litigation until they are bankrupt."
The room stirred in unrest. Julian remained paralyzed on his knees, his eyes wide as he stared at Clara’s back. "Clara... who did this to you?" Julian rasped, his voice trembling. "You told me you fell down the cellar steps during your stay at the estate. You swore it was an accident!"
Clara slowly rose to her feet. The silk dress clung to her waist, leaving the horrifying truth open to the ambient light. She turned her head slightly, peering down at Julian with a gaze stripped of affection. "I told you what your mother ordered the doctors to write down, Julian. I told you what kept me alive."
A sharp collective intake of breath swept through the guests. In the front row, Eleanor Vanderbilt, Julian’s mother, went completely rigid. Her glass slipped from her gloved hand, shattering against the stone in a spray of vintage champagne.
"Lies," Eleanor hissed, stepping forward, her composure cracking into venomous desperation. "The girl is mentally unstable! We took her out of poverty, and she claws her own skin to blackmail us on our family’s centennial night!"
Clara reached into the discreet seam of her evening bag, which lay beside her on the floor, and pulled out a small, metallic flash drive. "Then explain this, Eleanor," Clara said coldly. "Explain the nursery room on the third floor of Blackwood Manor."

Before Eleanor could scream for security to seize her, the crystal chandelier overhead flickered violently, and all the lights in the estate died, plunging the room into pitch black.
