Chapter 3 - Blind Retaliation

A chorus of terrified screams shattered the grand ballroom as total darkness swallowed the estate. Footsteps clattered frantically against marble. Glasses broke. Guests jostled against one another in blind panic.
In the pitch black, Clara felt a pair of rough, heavy hands grab her upper arms, deliberately digging fingers into the fresh wounds on her shoulder. A gasp of sharp, agonizing pain escaped her lips.
"Give me the drive, you little parasite," a harsh, raspy whisper hissed directly into her ear. It wasn't Julian’s polished tone, nor was it Eleanor's manic cadence. It was raw, heavy, and smelled faintly of copper and expensive scotch.
Clara drove her high heel down backward with all her remaining strength, connecting squarely with the assailant's shin. A muffled curse sounded behind her as the grip slackened. Clara spun, wrenching herself free, tucking the tiny silver drive securely inside the lining of her bodice. She threw herself sideways, tumbling behind a heavy decorative oak pedestal that held a bronze bust of the family patriarch.
Suddenly, emergency generators kicked in with a low, mechanical hum. Pale, amber-tinted emergency floodlights flickered to life along the baseboards, casting long, menacing shadows across the grand room.
The security guards were already swarming the floor, forming a human barricade around Eleanor and Julian. But Clara’s eyes snapped straight to the man standing barely five paces from where she had just been seized.
It was Richard Vanderbilt—Julian’s uncle, the recluse who supposedly lived in seclusion abroad. He stood dusting his velvet coat, his dark eyes locked directly onto Clara with predatory intensity. Across the center of his right knuckles were fresh scratches matching the angle of Clara's defensive strike.

Julian looked between his uncle and Clara, his mind struggling to assemble the grotesque puzzle. Before Julian could speak, the massive double oak doors of the ballroom were slammed wide open from the outside, revealing four armed men in unmarked tactical gear standing framed against the stormy night.
