Chapter 12 - Shattered Sanctuary

Christian tackled Clara to the hardwood floor just as a second bullet obliterated the medical cabinet, showering them in glass vials and chemical solutions.
"Sniper! North cliff ridge!" Christian shouted into his tactical headset.
Red laser sights danced like crimson threads through the darkness of the living room, cutting through the swirling rain that blasted through the shattered floor-to-ceiling windows. The alarm system shrieked, bathed in spinning red emergency lights.
"They found the safehouse in less than two hours," Clara yelled over the howling storm, shielding the journal with her body. "How?!"
Christian pulled her behind a reinforced kitchen island, unholstering his weapon. "There’s a tracker. Not on you, not on me. On the book."
Clara looked down at the antique leather binding. She jammed her fingers into the spine, ripping the dry leather apart. Embedded deeply inside the thick, aged spine was a micro-transponder the size of a grain of rice, blinking with an erratic, faint blue LED light.
"Arthur knew I’d take it," Clara realized with sickening clarity. "He left it for me to grab."
Heavy boots crunched against broken glass in the foyer. Three shadows moved into the living room, clad in unmarked dark tactical gear, carrying suppressed submachine guns. These weren't police; they were Arthur's private cleanup crew.
"Sweep the ground floor," a synthesized voice commanded through an audio modulator. "Arthur wants the ledger intact. Kill the girl and Christian on sight."
Christian gripped Clara's shoulder firmly. "There’s a reinforced escape tunnel beneath the pantry. Takes you down to the private boat dock at the base of the cliff. Get in."
"I’m not running while you fight them alone," Clara hissed, her hazel eyes blazing with defiance.
"You have the ledger, Clara! You are the only person alive who can end Arthur Vanderbilt!" Christian looked into her eyes, deadly serious. "Go. Now!"

He spun out from behind the counter, firing three rapid shots that dropped the lead operative. Clara didn't look back; she ripped the transponder out, tossed it onto the burning stove, and threw herself down the narrow iron hatch into the subterranean darkness below.
