Chapter 12: Whispers of the Past

Six months later, life had settled into a gentle, beautiful rhythm. The girls went to the local elementary school, their laughter filling our sunlit home every afternoon.

One evening, while clearing out old boxes in the attic, I found a small leather-bound journal that belonged to my father. I flipped through the yellowed pages until I hit an entry written thirty years ago.

“Victor’s heart is cold,” my father had written. “He craves power because he feels unloved. I pray Julian’s warmth will one day guide him back to the light.”

I sat on the wooden floor, staring at the words. Father had seen the dark seed in Victor long before I ever did. But instead of uprooting it, he had left it to grow in secrecy.

Sarah walked up the attic stairs, carrying two mugs of warm tea. She sat beside me, leaning her head on my shoulder. ""What are you thinking about, honey?""

""About legacy,"" I said softly, holding her hand. ""Victor wanted to build an empire of gold. But he ended up in a cage.""
