Chapter 1: The Echo in the Silence

The hospital screen glowed faintly against the dim kitchen lights. On it, the frail image of my wife, Sarah, lay motionless under pale blue blankets. My chest tightened until I couldn’t breathe. For five years, Victor had convinced me she was in an irreversible coma, kept alive only by his “generosity.”

I looked down at Lily, her tiny hands trembling as she held the phone. ""Uncle Victor said Mommy would wake up if you went away,"" she whispered, her hazel eyes glistening with raw fear.

The weight of the betrayal crushed me. Victor wasn't just my brother; he was the CEO of Blackwood Enterprises, the man I had trusted with my family's lives after our parents died. The maid, Elena, sobbed in the corner as the officers cuffed her hands behind her back.

""I'm sorry, Mr. Blackwood,"" Elena wept, her voice breaking. ""He threatened my daughter's life. I had no choice!""

""You always have a choice,"" I said quietly, kneeling beside Lily. I took her small, cold hands in mine. ""Daddy is here now, baby. Nobody is going to hurt us ever again."" But as I looked at the dark tea spilled across the marble floor, I knew this wasn't the end. It was the start of a war.
