Chapter 8: The Domino Effect

The afternoon news cycle hit like a tidal wave across the city. Scrolling banner headlines on every major news network flashed bold warnings: *Federal Investigation Expands into Harrison Enterprises; Academy Endowment Tied to Shell Companies; Corporate Titan Faces Financial Fraud Inquiry.*
Inside the sleek glass boardroom on the top floor of Harrison Enterprises, the silence was suffocating. Three senior board members sat around the polished conference table, avoiding eye contact with Richard Harrison, who stood by the floor-to-ceiling windows staring out at the city he once believed he owned. His phone buzzed incessantly on the table, a relentless reminder that his empire was crumbling.
""Richard,"" one of the board members spoke up, his voice trembling slightly. ""The banks are calling. They're freezing our commercial credit lines pending the outcome of the federal inquiry. If we don't release a public statement addressing the municipal fund transfers by tomorrow morning, the shareholders are going to trigger an emergency vote of no confidence.""
Richard didn't turn around. His dark suit jacket was unbuttoned, his tie slightly loosened—a rare sign of unraveling for a man who prided himself on absolute perfection. ""Tell them it's a smear campaign,"" Richard said, his voice dangerously low. ""Tell them the federal investigators are retaliating because of a personal vendetta.""
""A vendetta?"" Another board member scoffed bitterly, slamming a folder shut. ""Richard, your ten-year-old son assaulted a federal investigator's daughter on camera, and you tried to cover it up using school endowment funds! This isn't a vendetta; it's a public relations nightmare, and your arrogance brought it right to our front door.""
Richard finally turned around, his eyes flashing with cold fury. ""Watch your tone. I built this company from the ground up. Without me, every single one of you would be working out of a cubicle downtown.""
""And without us, you wouldn't have the capital to buy your way out of this,"" the board member replied coldly, standing up and grabbing his briefcase. ""I resign, effective immediately. And I suggest the rest of you do the same before the federal indictments drop.""
Within ten minutes, the boardroom was empty. Richard stood alone in the vast, silent room, the panoramic view of the city suddenly looking less like a kingdom and more like a cage.
Down at the federal field office, Elena walked briskly down the secure corridor holding a stack of freshly printed financial warrants. Marcus hurried alongside her, holding a tablet with live updates.
""The board members are cooperating, Elena,"" Marcus reported, breathless. ""They're turning over every ledger, every email, and every memo detailing the municipal kickbacks. Harrison’s financial shield is completely dismantled.""
Elena stopped outside the interview room where Leo was waiting to be picked up by his mother—Richard’s estranged second wife, who had finally been contacted by federal child services. Elena adjusted the collar of her grey trench coat, her expression unyielding.

""He thought money could buy him immunity from basic human decency,"" Elena said quietly, her voice steady. ""He was wrong.""
