Chapter 5: Whispers in the Precinct

The neon lights of the downtown police precinct flickered through the rain-streaked windows, casting a cold, blue glow across the metal desks. Inside the noisy bullpens, detectives hurried past with stacks of case files, completely unaware of the quiet storm brewing between federal jurisdiction and local municipal power.

Elena sat across from Detective Miller in a cramped, windowless interview room. Miller was a veteran officer with tired eyes and graying hair, a man who had seen too many politicians bend the rules and too many honest cops pay the price for looking too closely. He slid a manila envelope across the metal table toward Elena.

""You're playing a very dangerous game, Agent Vance,"" Miller said quietly, keeping his voice low so the officers outside couldn't overhear. ""Richard Harrison owns this town. His thumb is on every promotion in this department, including mine. If I help you pull the incident logs from the school, my badge is gone by morning.""

Elena opened the envelope, pulling out the certified incident report from the private academy. It was identical to the one Principal Vance had tried to hide, detailing the exact moment Leo Harrison shoved Maya down the flight of concrete stairs. ""You took an oath, Miller,"" Elena said softly, her voice steady and persuasive. ""You swore to protect citizens, not corporate donors. An eight-year-old child has a broken arm because a spoiled brat thought he was above the law, and his father thinks he can buy the justice system.""

""Justice doesn't pay my pension, Agent,"" Miller muttered, rubbing his tired face. But he didn't pull the envelope back. Instead, he slid a second, smaller flash drive across the table. ""That's the dispatch recording from the security guard who called 9AS before Principal Vance forced him to hang up. It's unedited. It proves Harrison’s people tried to cover up the assault within ten minutes of it happening.""

Elena picked up the flash drive, slipping it carefully into her pocket. ""Thank you, Miller. You won't regret this.""

""I already regret it,"" Miller sighed, leaning back in his chair. ""Harrison has men everywhere. Be careful leaving through the back alley. Word travels fast when you're stepping on a billionaire's toes.""

Elena nodded, standing up and pulling the collar of her grey trench coat high around her neck. She walked out of the interview room, weaving through the bustling precinct floor. As she pushed open the heavy glass doors leading to the rear parking garage, a dark sedan with tinted windows slowly circled the corner, its headlights cutting through the misty rain.

She kept her hand firmly inside her coat, gripping her service weapon just in case. The intimidation tactics had begun. Richard Harrison wasn't just waiting for the courts; he was watching her every move. But every move he made to intimidate her only proved one thing: he was afraid of what she knew. And fear made people make mistakes.
