Chapter 2: Shadows of the Corridors

The silence that followed the flashing of the federal badge was heavy, pressing down on the plush carpeting of the principal’s office. Principal Laura Vance stood up so quickly her chair scraped loudly against the hardwood floor. Her face drained of color, her eyes darting between Elena’s federal credentials and Richard’s relaxed posture. Laura had spent years smoothing over minor infractions committed by the school's major donors, but a federal investigator standing in her office was an entirely different magnitude of trouble.
""Federal Bureau of Investigation,"" Elena stated clearly, her voice cutting through the tense atmosphere. She closed the leather case with a sharp click and returned it to her trench coat pocket. ""Special Agent Elena Vance. And this isn't just a schoolyard dispute, Mr. Harrison. Your son intentionally targeted an eight-year-old child, causing severe bodily harm. That goes far beyond the jurisdiction of a private academy disciplinary board.""
Richard Harrison let out a low, derisive laugh, though the smugness in his eyes had dimmed just a fraction, replaced by a calculating gleam. He stood up from his leather chair, smoothing the front of his expensive blue suit. He walked slowly around the mahogany desk, stopping a few feet away from Elena. He was tall, imposing, and entirely accustomed to intimidating anyone who stood in his path.
""Agent Vance,"" Richard said smoothly, using her title as if it were a mild annoyance rather than a legal threat. ""I run half the municipal contracts in this state. The police departments, the zoning boards, and certainly the local judges play golf at my country club on weekends. You might have a fancy piece of metal in your pocket, but out here in the real world, badges don't rewrite corporate sponsorships or municipal funding.""
Elena did not blink. She kept her posture rigid, her protective instincts shielding Maya, who was watching the exchange with wide, fearful eyes. Maya pulled her cast closer to her chest, trembling slightly. Elena kept her voice steady, refusing to take the bait. ""The real world, Mr. Harrison, happens to include federal jurisdiction. Especially when financial corruption intersects with civil rights violations involving minors on federally subsidized property.""
Principal Vance gasped, clutching her hands together. ""Federal property? But this is a private institution—""
""The academy receives federal grants for its science and technology wing,"" Elena interrupted, never breaking eye contact with Richard. ""Which means every security camera, every administrative file, and every witness statement regarding today's incident falls directly under federal oversight.""
Leo, realizing the conversation was shifting away from his absolute dominance, stepped forward again. His face flushed with sudden anger. ""Dad, tell her to leave! Make her go away!"" he yelled, his voice cracking slightly with childish frustration.

Richard placed a heavy, comforting hand on his son's shoulder, smiling down at him with indulgent affection. ""Don't worry, Leo. Grown-ups are just playing games. We're leaving now."" Richard looked at Elena with a cold challenge in his eyes. ""You have twenty-four hours to vacate this building, Agent. Bring your warrants if you think they'll save you.""
