Chapter 1: The Weight of Privilege

The heavy mahogany door of the principal’s office remained closed, trapping the thick air inside. Ten-year-old Leo stood with his shoulders squared, his blue suit jacket crisp and immaculate against his white button-down shirt. He stared up at his mother with a look of absolute, unearned superiority. His dark hair was neatly combed, but his eyes held a chilling coldness. He shoved his small hand hard against her chest, right over the grey trench coat she wore. The movement was sharp, practiced, and dripping with arrogance.
""My dad pays for this school,"" Leo snapped, his voice ringing through the quiet room with a defiant edge. ""I make the rules here.""
Elena, forty-two, did not flinch. Her dark hair was pulled back into a tight ponytail, emphasizing the sharp angles of her face and the protective, serious expression etched into her features. She absorbed the blow without stepping back an inch. Her gaze dropped away from her son for a fraction of a second, falling upon the quiet figure sitting on the edge of the leather sofa. Eight-year-old Maya sat silently, her left arm encased in a stark white plaster cast. A faint, greenish-yellow bruise darkened the delicate skin along her jawline. Elena’s chest tightened with a fierce, quiet ache, but she forced her breathing to remain slow and controlled. She looked back up at Leo, her jaw tightening.
""Did you push my daughter down the stairs?"" Elena asked, her voice dangerously calm, devoid of shouting or hysteria.
Across the room, Richard sat behind a polished walnut desk. At forty-five, he wore a tailored blue suit and a silk tie, looking every bit the successful corporate titan. He smiled smugly, his dark eyes crinkling at the corners with amusement rather than remorse. He leaned back in his leather chair, basking in his son's defiance as if it were a performance art. Beside him, Principal Laura Vance, a forty-year-old woman in a sharp grey suit, shifted uncomfortably in her seat, her face a mask of strained professional concern.
Leo smiled broadly, puffing out his chest with unashamed pride. ""Yes,"" he answered clearly, glancing back at his father for approval. ""And you can't do anything about it.""
Richard chuckled softly from behind his desk, crossing one leg over the other. The room felt suffocatingly small, dominated by the unshakable belief that money could buy immunity from any crime. But Elena’s hand slid slowly into the deep pocket of her grey trench coat. Her fingers closed around a familiar leather object. Without a word of warning, she pulled out a worn leather badge case and snapped it open, revealing a gleaming federal identification card and gold shield.
Richard’s smug smile faltered only slightly, though he waved a dismissive hand. ""Call the police,"" Richard sneered, his voice dripping with condescension. ""I buy everyone in this city.""

Elena stared across the desk, her eyes locking onto his with an intense, unwavering focus. ""We got the evidence,"" she whispered.
