Chapter 10: Breaking the Mold

Catherine sank onto the waiting area sofa, the polished leather groaning softly beneath her weight. The stark reality of Richard’s systematic conditioning was finally crashing down around her. For years, she had watched her son grow colder, more arrogant, and increasingly detached from reality, believing it was simply the burden of elite upbringing. Richard had isolated her, using his vast financial dominance to control every aspect of their family life, convincing her that questioning his methods was a sign of weakness.
""He told me... Richard told me that Leo was just learning how to survive in a ruthless world,"" Catherine whispered, her voice trembling as tears welled in her eyes. She looked up at Elena, taking in the steady, protective authority exuding from the federal agent's grey trench coat. ""I tried to reach him, Agent Vance. But every time I questioned Richard, he threatened to cut me off, to take my son away completely. He has lawyers who specialize in burying mothers like me.""
Elena sat down beside her, her demeanor softening while retaining its rock-solid strength. ""You aren't buried anymore, Mrs. Harrison. Your son made a grave mistake, but the root of that behavior sits in the environment his father built. However, Leo is still ten years old. He can be saved, but only if someone is brave enough to shatter the illusion of absolute immunity.""
Just then, the door to the child advocacy room swung open, and Marcus walked out, gently guiding Leo forward. The boy’s blue suit jacket was slightly rumpled, his defiant posture slipping just enough to reveal a flicker of deep confusion. When Leo saw his mother sitting there, his arrogant scowl faltered, replaced by a sudden, childish need for reassurance.
""Mom?"" Leo muttered, his voice losing its harsh edge. ""Why are you here? Dad said you were busy.""
Catherine stood up quickly, rushing over to kneel before her son. She gripped his shoulders, looking directly into his cold, dark eyes—eyes that had mirrored his father’s arrogance just hours ago. ""Your father lied to you, Leo. He lied to both of us. Believing you are better than everyone else, believing you can hurt people and simply pay your way out of the consequences... that isn't strength. That is cowardice.""
Leo recoiled slightly, unaccustomed to hearing anything other than praise from his parents. ""Dad said winners don't apologize!""
""Your father's world is burning down because of those lies,"" Catherine said firmly, her voice carrying a newfound steel. ""And we are going to learn how to be real people again.""

Elena watched the exchange from the doorway, her hand brushing against the leather badge case in her pocket. The foundation was cracking, and the truth was finally stepping into the light.
