Chapter 4: The Price of Silence

Back at the Harrison estate, the mood was vastly different. The sprawling mansion in the hills overlooking the city was a masterpiece of modern glass, marble, and steel. Yet, tonight, it felt like a fortress under siege. Richard Harrison paced back and forth across the expansive living room, his expensive leather shoes clicking rhythmically against the Italian tile floor. His phone was glued to his ear, his voice sharp and demanding as he spoke to his chief legal counsel.

""I don't care what it takes, Arthur,"" Richard barked into the phone. ""Get a judge to issue an emergency injunction blocking any federal subpoena of the academy's records. I want that agent off my son's back by sunrise.""

On the other end of the line, Arthur’s voice was cautious. ""Richard, Elena Vance isn't just some local cop. She’s a senior federal investigator with a spotless record. She reports directly to the regional director. Throwing money at this won't make her disappear the way it usually works with local inspectors.""

""Everyone has a price, or a weakness,"" Richard snapped, ending the call abruptly. He tossed his phone onto the minimalist coffee table and rubbed the bridge of his nose.

Across the room, ten-year-old Leo sat playing a high-end video game on a massive wall-mounted screen, completely unfazed by the tension in the house. He wore a plush cashmere sweater, his short dark hair neat as ever. He didn't look up when his father approached.

""Leo,"" Richard said, his voice softening slightly as he looked at his son. ""Did you tell anyone else at school about what happened with that little girl?""

Leo paused his game, looking up with mild irritation. ""Of course not, Dad. Why would I? She's just a nobody. Her mom looked poor anyway. Wearing a cheap trench coat like that.""

Richard managed a tight, approving smile, though a knot of unease twisted in his stomach. He prided himself on raising a son who understood power, but Leo’s absolute lack of empathy sometimes crossed the line from ruthless ambition into reckless sociopathy. Still, Richard pushed the thought away. In his world, strength was everything, and weakness was a disease to be eradicated.

Suddenly, the intercom at the front security gate chimed softly.

Richard frowned, walking over to the wall control panel. He pressed the camera feed button. To his utter shock, the screen showed two unmarked federal sedans idling outside the wrought-iron gates. No one stepped out. They were simply sitting there, a silent, unmoving reminder that the net was tightening.

""Dad? What is that?"" Leo asked, finally noticing the dark vehicles on the massive monitor.

""Nothing, son,"" Richard lied smoothly, though his jaw tightened. ""Just some people who don't know who they're messing with.""

He turned away from the screen, his mind racing. If Elena Vance thought she could intimidate him in his own city, she was sorely mistaken. He had built his fortune on burying secrets beneath layers of concrete and cash, and he wasn't about to let a federal badge tear it all down. He picked up his phone again, dialing a direct, unlisted number—a contact deep within the municipal police department who owed him far too many favors to refuse a late-night assignment.
