Chapter 3: Gathering the Broken Pieces

The walk to the car was agonizingly slow. Maya’s small sneakers scraped against the concrete pathway of the elite academy, each step a reminder of the physical and emotional trauma she had endured. Elena kept a protective arm around her daughter’s shoulders, guiding her toward the unmarked federal vehicle parked near the curb. The autumn wind bit sharply through Elena's grey trench coat, but she felt only the burning heat of anger and determination.

Once they were safely inside the car, Elena locked the doors and adjusted the heater, making sure Maya was comfortable. She reached back to gently adjust the blanket over Maya's good arm. ""Are you in a lot of pain, sweetheart?"" Elena asked, her authoritative veneer melting away instantly, replaced by the tender warmth of a devoted mother.

Maya shook her head, tears welling up in her large, dark eyes. ""I'm okay, Mom. But... why did Leo push me? I didn't even do anything to him. I was just walking to the library.""

Elena felt a fresh wave of fury rise in her chest, but she swallowed it down. She needed to be strong for Maya. ""You didn't do anything wrong, Maya. Leo was wrong, and his father was wrong to let him act that way. But I promise you, people who think they are above the law eventually have to answer for what they do.""

""Dad says money fixes everything,"" Maya whispered, echoing the toxic lessons her own father—Elena’s estranged ex-husband, who was not in the picture—had tried to instill, though Richard Harrison was an entirely different beast of wealth and corruption.

""Money doesn't fix broken bones, and it certainly doesn't erase the truth,"" Elena said firmly. She started the engine, shifting the car into gear. Instead of heading straight home, she drove toward the federal field office downtown. She couldn't afford to waste a single minute. Richard Harrison was already mobilizing his legal team, calling in favors, and likely attempting to scrub digital records before her team could secure formal subpoenas.

Inside the sleek glass-and-steel federal building, the atmosphere was a stark contrast to the quiet tension of the school. Analysts typed furiously at their stations, and phone lines buzzed softly. Elena walked Maya to the secure family liaison room, where a trusted colleague, Agent Marcus Vance—no relation, just a shared name and a deep mutual respect—was waiting with coloring books and hot cocoa.

""How did it go?"" Marcus asked quietly as Elena pulled him aside near the glass partition.

""Just like we feared,"" Elena replied, her voice low. ""Harrison is completely insulated by his wealth, and his son is following in his exact footsteps. But I secured the preliminary medical reports, and Principal Vance is terrified enough that she won't dare delete the lobby camera footage before morning. We need to move fast. Harrison’s financial empire is massive, but every empire has a rotten foundation.""

Marcus nodded grimly, handing her a thick manila folder. ""We pulled his corporate filings an hour ago. Harrison Enterprises isn't just a real estate firm. They've been laundering municipal construction funds through shell companies for three years. If we push the assault charge, we can use it as leverage to pry open his financial books.""

Elena opened the folder, her eyes scanning the glowing screen of her tablet as she cross-referenced the names. ""Let's bring him down piece by piece.""
