Chapter 6: Cracks in the Facade

The morning sun broke through the heavy grey clouds, casting long, sharp shadows across the courtyard of the elite academy. Inside the second-floor classroom, the atmosphere was thick with whispered gossip. Students in matching blazers cast nervous sideways glances at Leo Harrison, who sat at his usual desk near the window, leaning back with his arms crossed. Despite the federal intervention yesterday, Leo acted as though he owned the world, treating the whispering classmates with supreme indifference.

However, the illusion of absolute invincibility was beginning to fracture.

Principal Laura Vance sat in her office, staring blankly at the computer screen. Her hands trembled slightly as she read an urgent email from the academy’s board of trustees. The federal subpoena had officially landed on their desk overnight, demanding the preservation of all surveillance archives, financial contribution logs, and administrative communications relating to Richard Harrison and his son. The trustees were panicking; none of them wanted to be implicated in a cover-up for a ten-year-old's violent outburst.

Just then, the heavy oak door pushed open without a knock.

Richard Harrison strode into the office, his blue suit impeccably tailored, though his face was tight with barely contained rage. He didn't bother greeting Principal Vance. He slammed both palms down onto her desk, leaning forward until his face was inches from hers.

""What is this nonsense I'm hearing about the board panicking over a federal subpoena?"" Richard demanded, his voice dropping to a harsh, controlled whisper. ""I fund forty percent of this school's endowment, Laura. You tell those cowards on the board to shred the digital archives just like we discussed.""

Laura shrank back in her chair, swallowing hard. ""Mr. Harrison... I can't. The federal marshal service served the subpoena electronically at midnight. If we delete anything now, it’s not just a breach of school policy—it’s obstruction of justice. Federal felony charges.""

""Obstruction?"" Richard scoffed, straightening up and adjusting his silk tie with a contemptuous flick of his wrist. ""There is no obstruction when dealing with a rogue investigator who is overstepping her jurisdiction. My lawyers are filing an injunction right now to invalidate her credentials.""

""Her credentials are valid, Richard,"" a calm, resolute voice echoed from the doorway.

Richard whipped around. Elena Vance stood in the open doorway, flanked by two uniformed federal marshals. She wore her signature grey trench coat over her t-shirt, her expression carved from absolute resolve. She didn't wait for an invitation; she stepped fully into the office, her eyes locking onto Richard’s with quiet authority.

""Agent Vance,"" Richard sneered, recovering his composure with practiced ease. ""Trespassing on private property without an appointment. I suppose they don't teach protocol at federal training academies anymore?""

""We bypassed the appointment stage when your legal team attempted to illegally transfer three million dollars from the academy's endowment account into an offshore shell company at 2:00 AM,"" Elena replied smoothly, stepping closer. ""Which, incidentally, was automatically flagged by our financial crimes division.""

Richard’s eyes narrowed, a flicker of genuine shock crossing his features before he masked it with arrogance. ""You're delusional.""

""Am I?"" Elena pulled a folded document from her trench coat pocket and held it out. ""This is a federal warrant to search your personal and corporate financial records, Mr. Harrison. And right down the hall, your son is about to be interviewed by a child psychologist and a federal investigator regarding the assault on my daughter. The game is over.""
