Chapter 9: Sirens and Secrets

The flashing red and blue lights of three police cruisers illuminated the modern facade of their house like a crime scene. Two officers stood by the front door taking notes, while a paramedic checked Lily’s vitals inside the back of an ambulance. Ethan sat on the tailgate, holding a paper cup of water that his hands refused to steady. Detective Miller, a seasoned investigator with kind eyes and a weary expression, approached Ethan slowly. He asked Ethan to recount the events of the evening from the very beginning, listening without interruption. Ethan explained everything—the abuse, the hidden files in the wardrobe, Clara’s past, and the confrontation in the woods. Detective Miller nodded gravely, noting down key details in a small black leather notebook. He revealed that local authorities had already checked the psychiatric records Ethan mentioned and confirmed their grim authenticity. Clara had indeed been institutionalized years ago under a different surname, discharged only after manipulating her evaluators. The officers searched the house thoroughly but found it entirely empty; Clara had vanished into the night once again. Ethan felt a profound mix of relief and terror, knowing that while she was gone, she was still out there. Detective Miller placed a reassuring hand on Ethan’s shoulder, promising that an APB had been issued across state lines. He advised Ethan and Lily to spend the night at a secure local motel for their own safety. Ethan agreed immediately, unable to bear the thought of returning to the house where the nightmares had materialized. They packed a single duffel bag with essentials, ignoring the curated luxury of their suburban life entirely. As the police cruisers departed, Ethan drove his sedan away from the subdivision without looking back once in the rearview mirror. The motel room was modest, smelling faintly of bleach and old carpet, but it felt like a fortress compared to home. Lily fell asleep quickly on the double bed, her breathing finally calm and steady in the dim room. Ethan sat in the armchair by the window, watching the empty parking lot with unblinking vigilance, guarding his daughter's sleep.
