Chapter 14: Breaking the Cycle

""You should have kept running, Ethan,"" Clara said softly, her voice carrying an eerie, unnatural calmness through the room. Ethan shook his head, taking a steady step forward to bridge the distance between them. ""It ends here, Clara,"" he replied, his voice firm and unwavering, echoing clearly off the walls. Clara tilted her head, raising the wooden stick slightly as a micro-expression of annoyance crossed her features. She stepped forward to close the gap, raising the weapon to strike with sudden, calculated speed. Ethan didn't flinch or retreat; he caught her wrist mid-swing with a powerful, two-handed grip. Clara strained against his hold, her eyes flashing with sudden rage as her facade finally cracked beneath the pressure. ""You cannot control us anymore,"" Ethan said, his voice dropping an octave as he forced her arm down. Heavy footsteps echoed loudly on the wooden porch outside, followed by the authoritative shouts of approaching police officers. The front door swung wide open, illuminating the hallway in flashing red and blue light as Detective Miller stepped inside. ""Drop the weapon, Clara! Hands where we can see them!"" Miller commanded, his service weapon drawn and steady. Clara froze, her eyes darting between Ethan and the officers blocking every possible exit from the cottage. She slowly opened her fingers, letting the wooden stick clatter heavily against the floorboards at last. Two officers stepped forward quickly, securing her wrists in heavy steel handcuffs with practiced efficiency. Clara offered no physical resistance, her face returning to its chilling, blank mask as she was led outside. Ethan exhaled a long, shaky breath, the tension of the past months draining from his body all at once. He watched through the open doorway as the police cruiser transported her away, closing that dark chapter permanently. The house felt suddenly quiet, but this time the silence was filled with peace rather than dread. Ethan walked down the hall to check on Lily, opening her bedroom door to find her sleeping soundly. He whispered a silent promise to the sleeping child, knowing their nightmare was finally over.
