Ethan sat on the edge of the designer sofa, his hands locked behind his neck, staring blankly at the floor. Clara remained in the kitchen, speaking to the police officer with unsettling composure. She painted a picture of a stressed mother pushed to the brink by an unmanageable child, weaving a web of plausible deniability. Ethan listened from the living room, his stomach churning with disbelief. He stood up abruptly, intending to correct the narrative, but the officer held up a hand. The procedural protocol dictated that social services must be notified immediately given the nature of the visible injuries. Lily was wrapped in a thermal blanket on the armchair, clutching a stuffed rabbit to her chest. Her dark, tear-filled eyes tracked every movement Ethan made, seeking safety in a world that had suddenly turned upside down. When the police finally left, the silence in the house felt heavier than before. Clara approached Ethan slowly, her white shirt slightly rumpled, her expression shifting into one of manufactured grief. She whispered that they needed to protect their family name, suggesting that Ethan was overreacting to a momentary lapse in discipline. Ethan stared at his wife of ten years, realizing he had no idea who she actually was. The woman standing before him possessed a chilling detachment that defied human empathy. He told her to sleep in the guest room, his voice devoid of any warmth or compromise. Clara didn't argue; she simply turned and walked away with quiet, deliberate steps. Ethan knelt beside Lily, whispering soft reassurances that she would never be hurt again.
