Chapter 8: Confrontation in the Dark

Clara stood motionless on the gravel path, blending seamlessly into the shadows cast by the towering pines. She held the wooden stick from the living room loosely in her right hand, tapping it rhythmically against her thigh. The rhythmic *thud, thud, thud* echoed unnaturally through the quiet woods, sounding like a ticking clock running out of time. Ethan instinctively pulled Lily tighter against his chest, stepping back a pace to create distance between them. ""Let us pass, Clara,"" Ethan said, his voice dropping an octave into a dangerous, protective register. Clara tilted her head, her face illuminated faintly by the harsh glow of Ethan’s dropped phone on the ground. She asked him why he was fighting the inevitable, claiming that families required absolute discipline and unquestioning obedience. Ethan shook his head, telling her she was insane and that her reign of terror was finally over. Clara chuckled softly, a low, melodic sound that carried no humor whatsoever. She took a slow step forward, raising the wooden stick slightly as she closed the distance between them. Ethan scanned the area frantically, searching for an alternate route around her, but the brambles were too thick. He realized talking wouldn't work; Clara had crossed a psychological threshold from which she could never return. As Clara lunged forward with surprising speed, Ethan sidestepped the blow, using his shoulder to shove her hard. Clara stumbled against the rough bark of a pine tree, dropping the stick with a sharp clatter against the stones. Ethan didn't wait to see if she recovered; he broke into a dead sprint toward the subdivision lights. His lungs burned with every breath, but adrenaline kept his legs moving until they reached the paved sidewalk. He didn't stop until they were safely inside his car, locking all four doors with a frantic jab of the dashboard button. He tossed his phone onto the passenger seat and dialed emergency services with shaking fingers. The dispatcher’s calm voice answered on the third ring, demanding to know the nature of his emergency.
