Chapter 6: Unmasked Truths

Clara stood in the doorway, her hands resting casually in the pockets of her black trousers. She didn't look surprised to find Ethan standing near her wardrobe; instead, she looked almost relieved, as if a tiring performance had finally ended. ""You found it,"" she said softly, her voice devoid of the frantic energy or defensiveness Ethan expected. Ethan stepped away from the furniture, his fists clenched at his sides as he fought to control his trembling voice. ""Who were they, Clara?"" he demanded, pointing vaguely toward the hidden compartment. Clara walked over to the bed, sitting down with deliberate slowness, her posture remaining perfectly rigid. She explained with chilling calm that her previous life was simply a series of failed experiments in domesticity. She spoke of a husband who tried to leave and a daughter who failed to meet her impossible standards of perfection. Ethan listened in absolute horror, realizing he was married to a textbook sociopath who viewed human relationships as disposable. ""And Lily?"" Ethan asked, his voice cracking with emotional agony as the reality of his daughter’s danger hit him anew. Clara tilted her head, her blue eyes locking onto his with an unsettling, predatory intensity. ""Lily is strong,"" Clara replied smoothly. ""She learns faster than the others. She needs shaping, Ethan. You are making it difficult."" Ethan shook his head, stepping forward to loom over her, his rage finally overriding his fear. He told her their marriage was over and that he was taking Lily away tonight, permanently. Clara didn't blink; she simply smiled a cold, vacant smile that sent a shiver straight down his spine. She reminded him quietly that the house was legally registered in her name and that she controlled every financial asset they possessed. Ethan realized he was entirely trapped, financially and logistically, with a woman who held all the cards. He backed away from her, turning on his heel to rush toward Lily’s room before Clara could intervene. He threw open the door, expecting the worst, but the room was completely empty and undisturbed. Lily was gone, and the open bedroom window fluttered gently in the evening breeze.
