The park was bustling with families enjoying the unseasonably warm autumn afternoon, but Ethan felt entirely isolated. He sat on a green wooden bench, watching Lily push a low swing back and forth with measured hesitation. She refused to take off her jacket, despite the rising temperature, guarding her injured arm fiercely. Ethan’s phone vibrated in his pocket, startling him out of his anxious reverie. It was an unknown number, displaying a local prefix that felt vaguely familiar. He answered cautiously, pressing the device tightly against his ear. A hurried, breathless voice whispered through the static, warning him to leave the house before it was too late. Ethan demanded to know who was speaking, but the line went dead with a sharp click. He stood up quickly, his eyes scanning the park perimeter for anyone acting suspiciously. A man in a dark hoodie sat at a picnic table a few yards away, quickly looking down at his phone when Ethan made eye contact. Ethan felt a cold prickle of fear run down his spine as he realized someone was actively tracking their movements. He called Lily over, using an urgent tone that made her run to him without hesitation. He scooped her up into his arms, ignoring the curious glances from nearby parents enjoying the playground. They rushed back to the car, Ethan’s heart hammering against his ribs like a trapped bird. As he pulled out of the parking lot, he noticed a silver sedan trailing a safe distance behind them. He took three sudden turns through residential side streets, confirming his suspicion that they were being followed. The silver sedan eventually turned off, but the lingering sense of dread remained firmly intact. Ethan pulled into their driveway, realizing their modern sanctuary was actually a trap. Clara’s car was parked in the garage, her silhouette visible through the frosted glass of the front door. Ethan took a deep breath, steeling himself for the inevitable confrontation waiting inside. He needed to protect Lily, but he also needed answers that Clara was clearly determined to keep buried.
