Chapter 7: The Desperate Search
Panic gripped Ethan by the throat as he leaned out the open window, scanning the dark backyard below. The motion-activated floodlights illuminated the manicured lawn, casting long, eerie shadows across the patio furniture. Ethan vaulted over the windowsill, ignoring the sharp pain in his ankle as he hit the grass below. He sprinted toward the wooden fence bordering the property, calling out Lily’s name into the cool night air. The neighborhood was dead silent, save for the distant hum of traffic from the nearby highway. Ethan pushed through the gate leading to the wooded ravine behind their subdivision, praying he wasn't too late. The trees grew dense and tangled, blocking out the moonlight and plunging the dirt path into absolute darkness. He used his phone flashlight to illuminate the uneven terrain, his breath coming in ragged, painful gasps. Footsteps snapped a twig somewhere to his left, drawing his immediate attention toward the thick brush. ""Lily?"" he called out, his voice cracking with desperation as he forced his legs to move faster. A small figure stepped out from behind a massive oak tree, shivering in the damp night air. It was Lily, clutching her stuffed rabbit tightly, her eyes wide with fear in the harsh LED light. Ethan dropped to his knees, pulling her into a fierce, protective embrace that caused her to let out a soft gasp. ""I was hiding,"" she whispered into his shoulder, her small arms wrapping around his neck with desperate strength. Ethan kissed the top of her head, tears finally escaping his eyes to track down his stubbled cheeks. He asked her how she got out here, and Lily pointed vaguely deeper into the woods, mentioning a woman in a white shirt. Ethan’s blood ran cold. Clara was already out here, playing a twisted game of cat and mouse in the dark. He stood up, scooping Lily into his arms once more, and began running back toward the safety of the lit streets. But as they reached the edge of the tree line, they found their path blocked by a familiar silhouette.
