Chapter 11: Ghosts on the Highway

Ethan didn’t mention the black sedan to Lily, masking his sudden anxiety with a forced, cheerful smile. They packed up their motel room quickly, eager to put distance between themselves and the lingering threat. Ethan drove north toward the coastal town he had discussed with the real estate agent, keeping his eyes glued to the rearview mirror. The highway stretched out before them like a gray ribbon cutting through dense pine forests and rolling hills. The miles ticked away peacefully, the hum of the engine providing a soothing soundtrack to their escape. Around mid-afternoon, they stopped at a roadside diner for a late lunch, stretching their legs in the crisp autumn air. Ethan ordered warm soup and sandwiches, watching Lily draw pictures of seagulls on a paper placemat. The waitress, an older woman with kind wrinkles around her eyes, offered Lily an extra pack of crayons with a warm smile. Ethan thanked her quietly, appreciating the normal, human kindness in a world that had felt so hostile lately. As they ate, Ethan’s phone buzzed with an email notification containing the rental property listings he had requested. He scrolled through the options, selecting a charming, secluded cottage overlooking a rocky beach inlet. He replied instantly, securing the lease with a digital deposit and scheduling the move-in for the following morning. They finished their meal and returned to the car, feeling a renewed sense of purpose and direction. The final stretch of the drive wound along the rugged coastline, the ocean appearing in deep shades of indigo to their left. They arrived at the coastal town just as the sun began to dip below the horizon, painting the sky in fiery hues of orange and purple. The cottage was everything Ethan had hoped for—cozy, isolated, and surrounded by nature rather than suburban conformity. They carried their bags inside, listening to the rhythmic crashing of the waves against the shore below. Lily chose the smaller bedroom with the ocean view, unpacking her stuffed rabbit and setting it on the pillow. Ethan stood in the doorway, watching her settle into her new space with a deep sense of accomplishment. They were finally safe, far away from the shadows of their past life.
