Chapter 5: The Hidden Drawer

Inside the house, the silence was deafening. Clara was nowhere to be found on the main floor, leaving behind only the faint scent of floral perfume. Ethan ushered Lily upstairs, instructing her to stay in her room and lock the door behind her. He walked purposefully toward the master bedroom, his instincts driving him to search for anything that could explain Clara’s violent shift in behavior. He checked the usual hiding spots—the bedside tables, the closet shelves, the vanity drawers—finding nothing out of the ordinary. Just as he was about to give up, he noticed a slight asymmetry in the wooden framing of Clara’s heavy oak wardrobe. He pressed his fingers along the baseboard, feeling a hidden latch click softly under pressure. A false bottom slid open with a faint hiss, revealing a velvet-lined compartment tucked away from casual view. Ethan’s breath caught in his throat as he reached inside, pulling out a collection of old photographs and medical records. The top document bore the letterhead of a psychiatric facility located three states away. He flipped open the file, his eyes scanning the clinical notes detailing severe personality fragmentation and aggressive tendencies. The dates on the documents spanned several years prior to their marriage, neatly concealed before they ever met. Beneath the medical files lay a handful of photographs depicting a different family entirely—a man and a little girl who bore an uncanny resemblance to Lily. Ethan felt the room spin around him as the horrifying truth began to assemble itself in his mind. Clara had done this before, leaving behind a trail of broken lives and buried secrets that he had completely ignored. Footsteps echoed softly in the hallway outside the master bedroom door, halting Ethan in his tracks. He quickly slid the documents back into the hidden compartment, pushing the false bottom closed just in time. The door handle turned slowly, and Clara stepped into the room, her expression unreadable as she met his terrified gaze.
