Chapter 9

The monolithic glass-and-steel tower of Apex Global pierced the Seattle skyline like a dark monolith against the stormy night sky. Rain sheeted down the reflective glass facade, blurring the glittering city lights below. Parked in a subterranean delivery bay beneath the tower, the armored SUV idled quietly in the shadows of a concrete pillar.

Maya checked her tactical harness, ensuring her sidearm, lockpicking kit, and encrypted access tablet were securely fastened. She turned back to face Julian and Claire in the rear seat. "The main server hub is located on the forty-second floor. Security is automated with thermal sensors and patrol drones every ten minutes. Once we breach the service elevator shaft, we have a window of exactly eight minutes before the automated lockdown protocol reboots."

Julian stepped out of the vehicle first, adjusting the collar of his damp, ruined black suit with grim resolve. He pulled a heavy tactical vest over his shoulders, snapping the buckles into place. "Lead the way, Maya. I'm right behind you."

Claire moved with slow, careful precision as she exited the SUV, her elegant gold silk dress covered by a heavy tactical windbreaker Maya had provided. Her blonde hair was pulled back into a tight bun, exposing a face hardened by resolve. She carried a custom-built data tablet configured to interface directly with Apex Global’s proprietary architecture.

They slipped through a heavy maintenance door marked Authorized Personnel Only, bypassing the deactivated electronic lock with a frequency emulator Maya had wired together during the drive. The interior of the service stairwell was cold and sterile, smelling faintly of industrial solvent and ozone. They began the long, grueling climb upward, step by measured step, conserving their energy for the confrontation waiting at the summit.

As they reached the thirty-fifth floor, a sharp, metallic chime echoed from above, followed by the whir of an approaching automated security drone sweeping the stairwell with a crimson scanning beam.

"Hold," Maya whispered, pressing herself flat against the concrete wall. She motioned for Julian and Claire to do the same. The red laser beam swept across the steps just inches from Maya's boots, lingering for a tense, agonizing moment before the drone hummed softly and reversed its patrol vector up toward the thirty-sixth floor.

"That was too close," Julian whispered, his jaw clenched tight.

"It gets worse," Maya replied, gesturing toward the heavy fire door leading directly into the forty-second-floor server suite. "The final access point requires a biometric handshake from a senior corporate officer. And unless Jonathan Reed is waiting for us inside, we're going to have to bypass the sensor manually."
