Chapter 5

The footsteps halted just around the corner. A harsh, electronic voice cut through the damp air, bouncing off the stone walls. "I know you're down here, Julian," Marcus Vance called out, his tone dripping with an eerie, polished calm that contrasted sharply with the violent chaos of the evening. "You can't outrun a network blackout. The estate is completely sealed, and local law enforcement is currently responding to a diversion call thirty miles away."
Julian shifted in the shadows of the coal chute, his muscles coiled like a spring, but a firm hand from Maya kept him rooted in place. Maya didn't shout back. Instead, she used the distraction of Marcus’s monologue to evaluate the tactical geometry of the corridor. Twenty feet ahead, the tunnel opened directly into the estate's subterranean server room—a high-security vault featuring reinforced glass walls and a biometric sliding door currently held half-open by an emergency wedge.
"Marcus," Maya called out, stepping calmly out from the recess into the dim beam of the adversary's flashlight, keeping her weapon lowered but ready. "The download isn't going to complete. The master encryption keys are hardware-locked to Claire's biometric token. You can crack the firewall all you want, but without her fingerprint and retinal scan, you're looking at a dead end."
A tall, impeccably dressed figure stepped into the light. Marcus Vance stood holding a high-intensity tactical flashlight in one hand and a suppressed pistol in the other. His black suit was immaculate, devoid of a single speck of dust, reflecting a chilling detachment from the violence he had unleashed. He smiled thinly, his eyes cold as glass.
"Maya, the stubborn security consultant," Marcus said, tilting his head slightly. "You should have stayed in corporate audits. This doesn't concern you. Julian and Claire are remnants of an old, inefficient model of leadership. Apex Global is streamlining the market. The chandelier was just a polite warning to speed up their resignation."
"Attempted murder isn't a warning, Marcus," Claire's voice rang out clearly from the darkness of the alcove as she stepped forward beside her husband, her posture regal and unyielding despite the danger. "It's a federal crime with no statute of limitations."

Marcus raised his suppressed pistol, shifting his aim deliberately toward Claire. "Then it’s a good thing accidents happen so easily in old houses."
Before Marcus could squeeze the trigger, Maya moved with explosive speed. She fired a single, calculated round into the overhead water pipe, instantly releasing a high-pressure torrent of scalding steam that hissed violently between them, blinding Marcus in a blinding cloud of white mist and neutralizing his line of sight.
