Chapter 11

The heavy steel doors of the server suite slammed shut with an earth-shattering clang, sealing automatically from the outside as the quarantine lockdown engaged. The pulsing red emergency lights cast long, distorted shadows across the towering server racks.
"They've locked the physical bulkheads," Maya said instantly, drawing her sidearm as she sprinted toward the primary exit keypad. She slammed her palm against the manual release button, but the display flashed a cold, unyielding message: Override Denied. Security Level Alpha in Effect.
Julian rushed to her side, slamming his shoulder against the reinforced steel door, but it didn't budge an inch. "We're trapped," he said, his voice laced with grim realization. "This entire floor has been isolated from the building's main grid. There's no way out unless we crack the mainframe firewall from the inside."
Claire remained seated at the terminal, her fingers moving rapidly across the keyboard despite the blaring alarms and flashing red lights. Her face was a masterclass in calm determination. "They didn't trap us here to kill us, Julian. They trapped us here because they want the decryption keys back before we can upload my father's deposition to the federal securities commission."
As if on cue, the massive wall-mounted security monitor flickered, cutting away from the data streams to display a live video feed from the penthouse executive suite forty floors above. A tall, impeccably groomed man in an expensive charcoal suit sat behind a minimalist mahogany desk, swirling a glass of amber scotch. Jonathan Reed stared down into the camera lens with a cold, predatory smile.
“Julian. Claire. And, of course, the ever-persistent Ms. Vance,” Reed’s voice resonated smoothly through the server room's audio system. “I must applaud your tenacity. Climbing forty floors of a corporate stronghold in the middle of the night takes a remarkable amount of foolish bravery.”
"Save the monologue, Reed," Julian shouted into the nearest wall microphone, his voice dripping with venom. "Your corporate coup is over. We have Arthur's unedited deposition streaming directly to federal investigators as we speak."
Reed chuckled softly, taking a slow sip of his scotch. “Do you really believe federal investigators care about the rambling video of a medicated old man? By sunrise, that file will be classified under national security protocols, and you three will be indicted for corporate espionage and attempted corporate sabotage.”

Maya didn't waste breath arguing. While Reed was gloating, her eyes scanned the server room's architectural schematic displayed on a secondary maintenance terminal. "Claire," Maya whispered urgently, leaning over the console. "Look at the auxiliary cooling vents above rack seven. That’s an unfiltered air intake shaft leading directly to the building's exterior window-washing cradle."
Claire didn't look up from her screen, but her voice was firm. "Give me ninety seconds to complete the upload transfer to the secure cloud node, and I'll clear the vents for extraction."
