Chapter 13

The rain had softened to a persistent mist by the time the armored SUV pulled away from the downtown Seattle core, racing northward along the coastal highway toward the Canadian border. Inside the vehicle, the atmosphere was thick with adrenaline and exhaustion. Claire sat in the back seat, her gold silk dress stained with soot and moisture, but her expression was radiant with quiet triumph. On her tablet, the federal verification seal glowed brightly: Securities and Exchange Commission Investigation Docket #8849-B Confirmed.

Julian slumped against the leather seat, staring out at the breaking dawn painting the horizon in shades of bruised purple and pale gold. The terrifying events of the past twenty-four hours—the falling chandelier, the severed cable in the grand foyer, the descent into the subterranean tunnels, and the harrowing infiltration of the Apex Global tower—seemed like a lifetime ago.

"Jonathan Reed's legal team has already been placed under federal audit," Maya announced from the front passenger seat, reading an encrypted secure dispatch on her tactical tablet. "Local authorities raided the Swiss medical facility an hour ago. Your father is currently under independent medical care, and his legal representatives are nullifying all fraudulent power-of-attorney documents."

Claire let out a long, shuddering breath, closing her eyes as the last remnants of tension finally drained from her shoulders. She placed her hand over her abdomen, feeling the faint, reassuring movement of her unborn child. "We won," she whispered, her voice barely audible over the hum of the engine.

Julian turned, wrapping his arms around her and pulling her close against his chest. "We survived," he corrected gently, pressing a kiss to her blonde hair. "And our family is safe."

Maya glanced in the rearview mirror, offering a rare, approving smile before turning her attention back to the winding coastal road ahead. The immediate threat had been neutralized, but the lessons of the night remained etched into every fiber of their beings. Wealth and power could buy security systems, luxurious estates, and corporate dominance, but they could never purchase loyalty or genuine human courage.

As the first golden rays of the morning sun broke through the heavy coastal clouds, illuminating the ocean stretching out endlessly to the west, the armored vehicle vanished into the mist, carrying them toward a new, unbroken beginning where no hidden wire could ever catch them unawares again.
