Chapter 4

The air inside the maintenance corridor tasted of damp earth, old iron, and lingering gunpowder. Maya moved with silent, practiced efficiency, her boots making barely a sound against the uneven stone floor. Behind her, Julian navigated the steep iron rungs of the ladder, carefully guiding Claire down into the subterranean gloom. The gold silk of Claire's dress whispered against the brickwork as she descended, her determination overriding the physical toll of her pregnancy.

"Keep your breathing shallow," Maya whispered over her shoulder, pausing at an intersection where three brick tunnels branched off into the subterranean depths of the estate. The faint, rhythmic hum of a generator vibrated through the floorboards beneath their feet. "The main security server room is directly beneath the east wing. If Marcus is downloading the encrypted merger files, he’ll be anchored to the main terminal."

Julian stepped off the ladder, pulling Claire close to his side. His suit jacket was ruined, stained with plaster and soot, but his protective instincts burned hotter than ever. "If he touches those files, our entire holding company goes under, and our personal accounts will be drained within the hour. It’s not just about the attempt on your life, Claire. This is a hostile corporate takeover backed by lethal force."

"It's deeper than corporate espionage," Claire murmured, leaning against a damp stone pillar to catch her breath. She reached into the pocket of her gold dress and pulled out a small, encrypted flash drive, its metallic casing glinting faintly in the dim light. "Marcus didn't act alone. He was fronting for the board's primary venture capital partner—Apex Global. They wanted our family out of the way before the upcoming shareholder vote on the new biomedical patent."

Maya processed this new intelligence instantly. The scope of the threat had just expanded from a rogue employee to an international syndicate with bottomless financial resources. "That explains why the security cameras in the main foyer malfunctioned for exactly twelve minutes tonight," Maya said, her eyes narrowing as she studied a schematic map glowing faintly on her wrist-mounted tactical display. "We aren't just fighting a thief. We’re walking into an executed corporate hit."

Suddenly, the low hum of the generator died. Total silence swallowed the corridor, broken only by the distant, echoing sound of heavy boots clanking against iron stairs further down the tunnel. The beam of a high-powered tactical flashlight swept across the damp brick wall just twenty yards ahead of them, illuminating swirling dust particles in the damp air.

"Get down," Maya hissed, shoving Julian and Claire into the shallow recess of an old coal chute. She raised her sidearm, aligning her sights with the bend in the corridor as the heavy footsteps drew closer, accompanied by the cold, metallic click of a chambered round.
