Chapter 6

The subterranean corridor erupted into chaos as blinding white steam filled the confined brick space, hissing deafeningly against the cold stone walls. Marcus cursed loudly, firing two wild shots blindly into the dense mist. The bullets ricocheted off the reinforced iron pipes with ear-splitting screeches, sending a shower of orange sparks cascading down onto the damp floor.
Maya didn't hesitate. Dropping low to the ground beneath the primary trajectory of the steam, she slid forward across the slick concrete. Her right hand gripped the tactical flashlight she had dropped earlier, using the beam to disorient her target while her left hand swept low, executing a textbook leg sweep that caught Marcus squarely behind the knees.
Marcus hit the ground hard, the suppressed pistol flying from his grip and clattering across the slick floor into the darkness. Before he could recover, Julian was on him. Driven by a primal fury born of the terror inflicted upon his wife and unborn child, Julian pinned Marcus to the damp concrete, raining heavy, disciplined blows down upon his former associate's chest and face until Marcus stopped struggling, lapsing into a dazed, groaning submission.
"Julian, stop!" Claire yelled, stepping out of the alcove as the steam began to dissipate. Her voice was sharp, carrying an absolute authority that instantly penetrated Julian's adrenaline-fueled rage. "We need him conscious. If he dies down here, the master decryption keys die with him, and Apex Global walks away clean."
Julian exhaled heavily, his chest heaving as he stood up, wiping sweat and soot from his forehead. He looked down at Marcus, who lay groaning against the cold stone, a bloody lip splitting his pristine facade. Julian adjusted the cuffs of his ruined black suit with a sharp, dismissive jerk, the embodiment of cold corporate wrath replacing his panic.
Maya rose smoothly to her feet, holstering her sidearm and retrieving Marcus’s dropped firearm. She kicked the weapon deep into a dark service crevice out of reach. "Claire is right," Maya said, scanning the perimeter with her tactical light to ensure no secondary operatives were lurking in the shadows of the secondary tunnels. "Marcus was just the local project manager. The real architects of this takeover are sitting in a boardroom across town, waiting for confirmation that the family assets have been liquidated."
Claire walked over to the open server room door, her gold silk dress sweeping the floor. She tapped the emergency override panel with her thumb, and the secondary auxiliary power flickered back to life with a low, steady hum. The main monitors inside the glass vault illuminated, displaying a live global data transfer progress bar currently paused at eighty-two percent.

"He was uploading the biomedical patents to an external proxy server," Claire observed, her fingers flying across the auxiliary keypad with practiced speed. She entered a complex master override code, halting the transfer milliseconds before completion. "Data secured. The intellectual property remains ours."
Marcus stirred on the floor, spitting a drop of blood onto the concrete. He let out a dark, ragged chuckle, his eyes gleaming with malicious amusement even in defeat. "You think securing the patents saves you, Claire? Apex doesn't need your data anymore. They have the physical custody transfer documents signed by your father himself."
