Chapter 8

The armored black SUV roared through the reinforced gates of the estate, its headlights cutting through the heavy midnight fog rolling in from the coast. Maya sat in the front passenger seat, her eyes flicking constantly between the dashboard navigation system and the rearview mirror. In the back seat, Julian kept a protective arm around Claire, whose breathing remained measured and controlled despite the relentless physical and emotional strain of the night.
"We're forty minutes out from the private airstrip," Maya announced, her voice calm and authoritative. "My contact in Zurich confirmed that Arthur Sterling’s medical facility was visited by Jonathan Reed's legal counsel less than six hours ago. They executed a retroactive power-of-attorney amendment."
Julian stared out the rain-streaked window, watching the dark silhouettes of pine trees blur past in the night. "Arthur was never that calculating," Julian muttered, a mixture of anger and lingering disbelief in his tone. "He was a visionary, not a monster willing to sacrifice his own daughter and unborn grandchild for a hostile takeover."
"Power doesn't make people monsters, Julian," Claire said softly, resting her head against his shoulder. "It strips away whatever polite illusions they built to hide who they really were all along." She turned her gaze toward the encrypted flash drive resting securely in her palm. "We don't need my father's permission anymore. We just need the original paper trail stored in his private offshore vault in the Cayman Islands."
Maya glanced back, her expression serious. "That vault is guarded by biometric and cryptographic protocols that make the estate's security look like a child's lockbox. To access it remotely without triggering an international alert, we need a secure terminal with direct satellite uplink—which means we have to break into Apex Global's regional data center in downtown Seattle."
Julian let out a humorless laugh, shaking his head. "Break into an armed corporate fortress in the middle of the night? That’s suicide, Maya."

"It's the only play we have left," Maya replied evenly, her hands resting firmly on the steering wheel as she navigated a sharp mountain curve. "If we go to the authorities now, Reed's legal team has already bought out the local jurisdictions. We are legally dead as of midnight. The only way to reclaim our lives is to strike at the heart of their financial infrastructure before the markets open tomorrow morning."
Claire placed her hand over Julian’s clenched fist, silencing his objections with a single, steady look. "She’s right, Julian. We fight on our terms, or we don't fight at all."
