Chapter 7

The mention of Claire's estranged father, Arthur Sterling, struck the room like physical impact. Julian stiffened, his gaze snapping from Marcus back to his wife. For years, the relationship between Claire and her billionaire father had been a fractured landscape of corporate rivalries and bitter estrangement, culminating in Arthur stepping down from active board management twelve months ago under mysterious health circumstances.
"My father has been in a private Swiss medical facility for over a year," Claire said, her voice dropping register, though her composure remained intact. She turned sharply toward Marcus, her blue eyes narrowing. "He’s barely coherent due to early-onset neurological decline. He couldn't sign a custody transfer even if he wanted to."
Marcus laughed again, a dry, grating sound that echoed off the damp brick walls. "That’s what his legal team wanted the public to believe. But true power doesn't retire, Claire. Arthur Sterling orchestrated this entire merger twelve months ago as a contingency plan against your marriage to Julian. He never approved of your husband, and he certainly didn't trust you with controlling stake of the Sterling-Vance bioscience portfolio."
Julian stepped forward, grabbing Marcus by the lapel of his ruined suit jacket and hoisting him halfway off the ground. "You're lying. Arthur signed over his voting shares to Claire on our wedding day."
"On paper, yes," Marcus wheezed, gasping for air against Julian's tight grip. "In reality, the foundational trust agreement contains a termination clause. If either you or Claire face a fatal accident before the end of this fiscal year, ninety percent of the estate reverts automatically to the Sterling Family Foundation—which is currently chaired by Arthur’s hand-picked proxy... Jonathan Reed."
Maya stepped between the two men, applying firm pressure to Julian’s arm until he released his grip, letting Marcus slump back against the floor. "Jonathan Reed is the managing partner of Apex Global," Maya stated, her mind racing as the puzzle pieces snapped into a horrifyingly coherent picture. "The chandelier wasn't just a random hit. It was designed to trigger the trust's survivorship clause, legally stripping Julian and Claire of their corporate standing before they even knew what hit them."
Claire placed a steady hand on her abdomen, taking a deep, calming breath. The revelation about her father's betrayal cut far deeper than any corporate rivalry. It was a profound personal wound, inflicted by the man she had spent her entire life trying to honor. Yet, there was no room for grief tonight. Survival demanded absolute, unyielding clarity.

"We need to get out of this estate," Claire said, her voice carrying an absolute, unarguable weight. "If Marcus is right, the legal trap has already been filed at the county courthouse. By sunrise, our bank accounts will be frozen, our security clearances revoked, and the estate seized under emergency probate laws."
Maya nodded in agreement, pulling a secure satellite phone from her tactical vest. "I have a transport waiting at the perimeter emergency gate. But first, we need to secure physical proof of Arthur's mental coercion before Reed's legal team burns the Swiss facility's records."
