Chapter 8: Whispering Shadows

The peace of the mountain cabin was brief. By nightfall, a heavy mist rolled down from the peaks, shrouding the surrounding forest in a thick gray blanket.
Inside, Lily was coloring at the kitchen table, humming a simple nursery rhyme. Clara was preparing dinner, while Julian sat near the window, constantly checking his phone. The screen showed multiple missed calls from board members, news reporters, and Sabrina's family lawyers.
Suddenly, the cabin's outdoor security light flickered and died.
Julian stood up instantly, his instincts on high alert. ""Clara, take Lily into the back bedroom. Lock the door and stay low.""
""Julian, what is it?"" Clara asked, her voice tight with panic.
""Just go,"" he whispered, grabbing a heavy flashlight from the counter.
Clara quickly picked up Lily and darted into the back room, pulling the thick wooden door shut behind her. Julian crept toward the front window, peeling back the curtain just enough to glance outside.
Through the mist, two dark figures were moving quietly across the driveway, heading toward the porch. They were equipped with flashlights and communication headsets—professionals, not simple street thugs.
Julian realized with a chill that Marcus hadn't waited for the twenty-four-hour deadline. He had tracked the SUV's GPS location.
Moving silently, Julian walked to the side door. He knew the layout of the cabin's exterior better than anyone. Instead of waiting inside like a trapped animal, he stepped out into the cold night air, slipping into the shadows of the porch.
As the first trespasser reached the porch steps, Julian stepped out from behind a wooden pillar, swinging the heavy flashlight with full force. It struck the man's arm, knocking a weapon from his grip. The man stumbled back with a grunt.
The second intruder raised his flashlight, blinding Julian for a second. ""Vance! Just hand over the drive and the book! Nobody needs to get hurt!""

""You came to the wrong house,"" Julian growled.
He lunged forward, tackling the second man into the wooden railing. The railing gave way, and both men tumbled onto the soft, muddy ground below.
