Chapter 3: A Safe Haven

By nightfall, the storm outside had intensified. The grand mansion, usually bustling with caterers and wedding planners, felt empty and vast. Julian had led Clara and Lily to the east wing of the estate, a secluded set of rooms that his late mother used to occupy.
Lily had finally fallen asleep on the large velvet sofa, wrapped in a warm fleece blanket. Her breathing was rhythmic and peaceful. Clara sat beside her, sipping a cup of warm tea that Julian had brought her.
""She looks like you, you know,"" Clara said softly, staring at the little girl's peaceful face. ""She has your eyes. And whenever she's thinking hard, she tilts her head just like you do.""
Julian sat down in the armchair opposite them, stripping off his tuxedo jacket and rolling up his shirt sleeves. The polished corporate executive was gone; in his place sat a man confronted with the raw reality of fatherhood.
""Where have you been living all this time?"" Julian asked.
""A small town two hours north,"" Clara replied. ""I was working at a local bakery. It was quiet, modest, but it was ours. Until last week, when a package arrived at my door. It was a metal ledger that belonged to my father. He kept detailed records of safety violations at the Vance shipping docks.""
Julian’s brow furrowed. ""Safety violations? My father always maintained that the dock accident was an unpreventable tragedy.""
""It wasn't an accident, Julian,"" Clara said, her voice dropping to a whisper. ""Your father cut corners on safety equipment to save millions during the port expansion. My father tried to report it. A week later, the crane collapsed. And last week, someone realized that my father had kept a duplicate logbook. They broke into my house searching for it.""
Julian felt a cold chill run down his spine. The empire he had worked so hard to build was built on a foundation of lies and blood. His father, Arthur Vance, had passed away two years ago, leaving Julian the helm of the corporation. But the shadows of Arthur's deeds were clearly still alive.
""Who came to your house, Clara?"" Julian asked earnestly.
May you like
""I didn't see their faces,"" Clara whispered, her hands trembling as she held the tea cup. ""But they spoke about the board of directors. They said the ledger couldn't be allowed to see the light of day. They said... they would eliminate any loose ends.""
Julian stood up, walking toward the window looking out into the dark, rain-swept grounds. ""They won't touch you or Lily. Not while I'm breathing.""
