Chapter 6: A Divided Loyalty

Julian instinctively pulled Lily behind him, shielding her from Marcus's gaze. Clara rushed forward, gathering the girl into her arms and holding her close against her chest.

""Touch them, Marcus, and I swear you won't live to see the courtroom,"" Julian said, his voice dropping to a dangerous whisper.

Marcus raised his hands in a mock gesture of surrender, though a cold smile remained on his face. ""Calm down, nephew. I am not a monster. I don't harm children. But let us be practical. You step forward with those records, and the investigation will drag the Vance name through the mud for years. The company will go bankrupt. Hundreds of innocent employees will lose their jobs. Is your moral crusade worth ruining thousands of lives?""

""You don't care about the employees,"" Clara spat out. ""You only care about your power.""

""Power keeps the lights on, my dear,"" Marcus replied smoothly. He turned back toward the door. ""I'll give you twenty-four hours, Julian. Think about what you're throwing away. Hand over the ledger, and we ensure Clara and the child live comfortably for the rest of their lives—far away from here. Fight us, and you'll find out just how cold the world can be when you have no money and no friends left.""

With a subtle wave of his hand, Marcus swept out of the room, his two security guards following closely behind.

The heavy silence returned, leaving only the sound of Lily’s quiet breathing as she rested her head against Clara's shoulder.

Julian walked over to his desk and leaned against it, pressing his fingers to the bridge of his nose. The weight of his entire life was pressing down on him.

""Julian?"" Clara said softly, stepping closer. ""Are you okay?""

Julian looked up, meeting her gentle hazel eyes. ""He's right about one thing. The moment I reveal this, the company falls. My family's legacy will be destroyed. But staying silent... staying silent makes me just like him.""

""You are nothing like him,"" Clara said firmly. ""A bad man wouldn't have hesitated to throw us out yesterday. A bad man wouldn't be standing here trying to protect a child he only met twelve hours ago.""

Julian looked at Lily, who was reaching out her tiny hand toward him. He reached out and gently touched her small fingers. For the first time in years, a genuine, warm smile broke through his stoic face.

""We need to get you two out of the city,"" Julian said. ""I have a cabin near the mountains. No one knows about it. You'll be safe there while I figure out how to deal with Marcus.""
