Chapter 11: The Unraveling

At 2:00 AM, the headlights of a single sleek sedan illuminated the entrance of the abandoned warehouse.

Julian stepped out to meet the driver. A tall, sharp-dressed woman stepped out of the car, carrying a leather briefcase. It was Evelyn Reed, an unyielding prosecutor known for taking down corporate corruption.

""Julian,"" Evelyn said, shaking his hand firmly. ""When you called me at midnight saying you had evidence against your own board, I thought it was a joke.""

""It's no joke, Evelyn,"" Julian replied serious. ""Inside this ledger are the real logs from the crane collapse four years ago, along with illegal offshore transfer records managed by Marcus Vance.""

They walked into the office. Evelyn spent the next forty-five minutes reviewing the documents under the dim desk lamp, her expression growing increasingly grave with every turned page.

""This is damning,"" Evelyn finally said, closing the leather book. ""This isn't just safety negligence, Julian. This is intentional destruction of safety records and corporate fraud exceeding fifty million dollars. With this, I can issue arrest warrants for Marcus Vance and three other top executives by sunrise.""

Clara let out a long, shuddering breath, pressing her hand against her chest as if a heavy weight had finally been lifted.

""There's one condition, Evelyn,"" Julian said.

Evelyn raised an eyebrow. ""You know you're not in a position to make conditions, Julian.""

""I want Clara and my daughter given full state protection immediately,"" Julian said firmly. ""Marcus knows they exist, and he will stop at nothing to eliminate them before trial.""

Evelyn looked at Clara, then at the little girl sleeping on the couch. Her stern expression softened slightly. ""Agreed. I'll have federal marshals escort them to a safe house within the hour.""

Clara stood up quickly. ""No! Julian, I'm not leaving you.""

Julian walked over to her, taking both of her hands in his. ""You have to, Clara. Just for a few days. Once Marcus is in custody, it will be safe. I need to stay in the city to handle the corporate fallout and make sure the board doesn't destroy remaining records.""

""Promise me you'll be careful,"" Clara whispered, tear glistening in her eyes.

Julian reached up, gently wiping a tear from her cheek with his thumb. ""I promise. I have a family to come back to now.""
