Chapter 10: The Iron Docks

An hour later, an old, rusted pickup truck pulled up behind an abandoned warehouse near the industrial docks of the city. Julian had swapped his luxury SUV for the truck, borrowing it from a trusted old caretaker who lived near the mountain town.
The docks were quiet at night, save for the low hum of distant cargo ships and the rhythmic lap of waves against the concrete piers. This was Pier 14—the very site where Clara’s father had lost his life four years ago.
""Why are we here?"" Clara asked quietly, looking out at the dark silhouette of the massive cranes standing like silent giants against the night sky.
""Because this is where it all started,"" Julian said, staring at the crane structure. ""And because this is the place Marcus would never think to search for us tonight. He thinks I'm running away. He doesn't know I'm coming for him.""
They walked inside a small, disused supervisor’s office overlooking the docks. Dust covered the old desks, but the electricity still worked. Julian turned on a single desk lamp, casting a warm glow across the room.
Lily was exhausted, curling up on a small bench wrapped in Julian's coat.
Clara walked over to the glass window, looking out at the spot where her father’s life had ended. ""I used to come here with him when I was little,"" she said softly, her eyes glistening with unshed tears. ""He loved his work. He was proud of building things that lasted. He always told me that a building is only as strong as its foundation.""
Julian walked up behind her, standing close. ""Your father was a honorable man, Clara. My father built an empire on rotten pillars, and Marcus is trying to keep those rotten pillars standing.""
""What are you going to do?"" Clara asked, turning to look at him.
Julian pulled the leather ledger from his bag, along with a small flash drive he had retrieved from the cabin safe. ""I’m not going to the police tomorrow morning. I’m going tonight. I called an old classmate of mine—she's an Assistant District Attorney. She’s meeting me here in two hours.""
Clara looked at him with admiration and fear mixed in her gaze. ""If you do this, Julian... there is no turning back. You will lose the Vance company. You might lose everything.""

Julian looked over at Lily, who was fast asleep, her breathing peaceful and steady. He turned back to Clara and smiled softly.
""I’m not losing anything that matters,"" he said gently. ""For the first time in my life, I actually have something worth fighting for.""
