Chapter 7: The Mountain Refuge

Three hours north of the city, nestled deep within a dense pine forest, sat a modest timber cabin. It was a place Julian’s mother had bought years ago, far away from the glitz and corporate politics of the Vance family.
The air was crisp and smelled of pine and damp earth. As Julian parked the SUV near the front porch, the quiet rustling of leaves was a welcome relief from the tension of the city.
Clara carried a sleeping Lily inside, while Julian brought in their bags. The interior of the cabin was warm and rustic, filled with wooden furniture, stone fireplaces, and old family photographs from a simpler time.
""It's beautiful,"" Clara murmured, looking around the living room as she laid Lily down on a cozy bed in the adjacent room.
""My mother brought me here when I was a kid,"" Julian said, starting a fire in the hearth. ""It was the only place where my father couldn't reach us with his business calls. It was the only place that felt real.""
Clara sat by the fireplace, stretching her hands out toward the growing flames. ""Thank you, Julian. For everything.""
Julian sat down on the rug beside her, looking into the fire. ""I should be apologizing to you. If I had been stronger four years ago... if I hadn't let my father dictate my life, you wouldn't have had to raise Lily alone in hiding.""
Clara looked at him, her expression soft. ""We were young, Julian. You were trying to live up to impossible expectations, and I was terrified of destroying your future. I don't blame you for the past. I only care about what happens now.""
""What happens now is that I do what's right,"" Julian said, looking into her eyes. ""I'm going to take the ledger to the Federal Prosecutor's office on Monday.""
Clara searched his face. ""You know what that means, right? You could face scrutiny too. Marcus will try to frame you as part of the cover-up.""

""Let him try,"" Julian said, his voice brimming with a quiet determination. ""I spent my whole life trying to earn my father's approval, only to realize he was building a house of lies. I won't let Lily grow up in a world built on those same lies.""
For the first time in years, the space between them felt free of secrets. As the fire crackled in the hearth, Julian reached out and softly placed his hand over Clara's trembling fingers, offering a promise of protection that didn't need words.
