Chapter 4: The Ledger’s Secret

The next morning, the sun broke through the storm clouds, casting long golden rays through the mansion's tall windows. Julian spent the early hours in his private study, going through the old files left behind by his father's former personal assistant.

A soft knock at the door interrupted his thoughts. Clara stepped into the room, holding a small leather-bound book wrapped in oilcloth.

""This is it,"" she said, placing it on the heavy mahogany desk.

Julian unhitched the strap and opened the ledger. Page after page was filled with meticulous hand-written notes, serial numbers, dates, and signatures. As he flipped through the pages, his heart sank. It wasn't just safety negligence; there were records of illegal off-book offshore transactions, systematic bribery, and explicit instructions to ignore structural warnings on heavy machinery.

""This proves corporate manslaughter,"" Julian said quietly, his hands grasping the edges of the desk. ""My father was responsible for your father's death.""

Clara stood across from him, her posture posture straight, though her eyes held a profound sadness. ""I didn't bring this to you for revenge, Julian. I don't want money, and I don't want to burn down your family name. I brought it because it's dangerous. People are willing to kill for this book.""

Julian looked up at her. ""You could have gone to the police.""

""And trust who?"" Clara asked softly. ""Your family owns half the city's infrastructure. Who would listen to a girl with no money and a father who died as a disgraced mechanic? I brought it to you because despite everything... despite the past, I knew you were a good man. I knew you wouldn't let them hurt Lily.""

Before Julian could answer, the heavy wooden doors of the study flew open. Marcus Vance, Julian’s uncle and the current chief operating officer of Vance Enterprises, walked into the room, flanked by two security guards in dark suits.

""Julian,"" Marcus said, his voice smooth as silk, yet devoid of warmth. ""I heard yesterday's festivities ended... prematurely. And I see you've brought unexpected guests into the family home.""

Julian immediately closed the ledger and placed a hand over it. ""Marcus. What are you doing here without calling ahead?""

Marcus smiled cold, his eyes narrowing as he locked onto the leather book on the desk. ""I'm here to clean up a mess that should have been dealt with four years ago.""
