Chapter 14: Rebuilding the Foundation

Two months later.

The summer sun shone brightly over a quiet neighborhood on the outskirts of the city. Away from the towering skyscrapers and high-society galas, a modest two-story house with a white porch stood surrounded by blooming flower gardens.

Julian sat on the front porch steps, wearing a simple linen shirt and jeans. He held a small wooden toy boat in his hands, using a pocket knife to smooth out the edges.

The screen door opened, and Clara stepped out, holding two glasses of lemonade. She sat down next to him, passing him a glass with a warm smile.

""How are the corporate transition teams doing without you?"" Clara asked, taking a sip of her drink.

""They're doing great,"" Julian said with a soft chuckle. ""The new independent board took over last week. The restitution fund has already assisted over fifty families. I sold my majority shares, Clara. I kept just enough to secure Lily's future, but I'm done with the corporate world.""

Clara looked at him, searching his face. ""Do you miss it? The power? The estate?""

Julian stopped carving the wood and looked out at the yard where his daughter was playing. He turned to look at Clara, taking her hand in his.

""I spent thirty years living in a mansion full of gold, and I was completely miserable,"" Julian said, his voice filled with sincere warmth. ""I didn't have a home, Clara. I just had a building. I only found a home when you brought Lily into that foyer.""

Clara felt a lump form in her throat, her hazel eyes filling with happy tears. She leaned her head against his shoulder, feeling the steady, calm beat of his heart.
