Chapter 2: Shadows of the Hudson**

The high-society gala dissolved into chaos. Flashes from smartphones erupted like strobe lights as influencers and journalists scrambled to capture the scandal of the decade.
"Security! Get this woman out of here!" Victoria shrieked, no longer the composed heiress who had graced the cover of *Forbes* the previous month. Her veneer had completely vanished.
Two burly guards stepped toward Elena, but Charles raised a commanding hand. "Don't touch her. Anyone who lays a finger on her answers to me."
Elena didn't wait for Charles to play the white knight. She had learned long ago that relying on powerful men was a fool's errand. Six years in an obscure fishing village in upstate New York, working two diner shifts a day while hiding behind an alias, had forged iron in her spine. She wasn't the fragile little Vance heiress who used to hide in library corners anymore.
"Charles, don't play the grieving brother-in-law," Elena said quietly, sidestepping the guards with fluid grace. "You signed off on my death certificate after only fourteen months of searching. You took my seat on the board. And then you gave my mother's heirloom diamond ring to the woman who paid the mechanic."
A collective gasp swept through the gallery. Victoria’s face drained of color.
"That's slander!" Victoria hissed, retreating toward the VIP corridor. "I will have you ruined!"
"You already tried to kill me once," Elena replied with a cool, devastating smile. "Ruining me is a little beyond your reach now."

Turning on her bare, damp heels, Elena walked toward the grand exit doors. She didn't run. She walked with the deliberate stride of a woman who had arrived with a purpose and had no intention of retreating until justice was served.
