Chapter 1: The Broken Glass**

The crystal champagne flute shattered across the polished parquet floor, spraying amber liquid and razor-sharp shards over Victoria’s designer heels.
Victoria Sterling slowly spun around. Her breath caught in her throat. Standing just ten feet away, flanked by the gallery’s private security detail, was Charles Vance. The heir to the Vance shipping empire and Victoria’s fiancé of three months wasn't looking at Victoria, though. His eyes were wide, fixed entirely on the dripping figure standing in the center of the gallery floor.
Elena Vance stood shivering under the relentless blast of the industrial air conditioning. Water dripped from her soaked chestnut curls, running down the hollows of her collarbones and clinging to the pale blue silk of a dress that had cost more than an average family’s mortgage. She had crawled out of the Hudson River less than two hours ago, bruised, coughing up briny river water, and presumed dead for six whole years.
"Elena?" Charles whispered, his voice trembling beneath the vaulted glass ceiling of the Manhattan gallery.
Victoria stepped between them, her crimson suit sharp and defensive. Her mask of aristocratic poise was cracking at the seams, but she forced an arrogant laugh. "Charles, darling, don't let this vagrant manipulate you. Someone clearly paid this street girl to ruin our gallery opening. She looks like a drowned rat."
"Look at her face, Victoria," Charles choked out, stepping forward with unsteady legs. "Look at her eyes."
Elena did not shout. She didn't cry or throw accusations. She simply raised her chin, her piercing hazel eyes cutting through the murmuring crowd of billionaire investors, socialites, and art critics.
"Six years ago, someone cut the brake lines on my sedan before I drove over the bridge," Elena said, her voice clear, calm, and carrying across the dead-silent hall. "They thought the current would wash away their greed. But truth doesn't drown, Victoria. It just learns how to swim."

With those words, Elena reached into the soaked lining of her dress and pulled out a small, waterproof flash drive sealed in heavy resin.
