The public outcry was swift and overwhelming. Protesters gathered outside the Sterling headquarters, demanding accountability and reform.
In a private briefing room at the federal courthouse, Charles Vance signed the final papers transferring his entire fifty-one percent controlling interest in the Vance estate back to Elena.
"I'm stepping down from the company permanently, Elena," Charles said, pushing the documents across the table. "I'm going to cooperate with the federal prosecutors fully, even if it means facing charges for corporate negligence."
Elena looked down at the signature line. "Why, Charles?"
"Because you were the only one who actually believed in what this company was founded to do," Charles replied, his voice heavy with genuine remorse. "I wanted the prestige without the responsibility. I don't deserve any of it."
"You made terrible choices, Charles," Elena acknowledged honestly. "But taking accountability is the first step toward redemption. I hope you find it."
