Chapter 15: The River Runs Clear**

Early the next morning, before the city awoke, Elena walked down to the pier overlooking the Hudson River.

The morning mist was lifting off the calm water, catching the golden rays of the sunrise over the Manhattan skyline. The chilly river breeze tousled her hair, but she didn't shiver.

Six years ago, she had been swallowed by these very waters—terrified, betrayed, and stripped of her identity. For a long time, the river had symbolized her greatest nightmare.

She pulled a single white rose from her coat pocket and held it over the railing.

"We did it, Dad," Elena whispered to the rising sun. "The promise is kept."

She let go of the rose. It drifted down through the crisp morning air and landed gently on the surface of the water, carried smoothly out to sea by the gentle tide.

Elena Vance turned her back on the river and walked toward the awakening city, ready to build a future defined not by what she had lost, but by the lives she was going to save.
