Chapter 9 - Reunited in the Dark

Jax hurried down the dimly lit hallway, his heart pounding in his chest louder than any motorcycle engine. He pushed open the door to Room 214 and stopped dead in his tracks.
On the small hospital bed lay Sarah. Her face was pale, thin, and worn by years of hardship and fear, but to Jax, she was just as beautiful as the day he had left her. Leo was already at her side, holding her weak, slender hand against his cheek, tears dripping silently onto the white bedsheets.
Sarah opened her eyes slowly, her gaze shifting from her son to the tall man standing in the doorway. A faint, heartbreaking smile touched her lips.
"Jax..." she whispered, her voice barely more than a breath. "You came."
Jax walked over to the bed and fell to his knees, taking her other hand in his. "I'm sorry, Sarah," he choked out, the tears he had held back for eight years finally breaking through his resolve. "I'm so sorry I left you. I thought I was protecting you."
"I know," she murmured softly, squeezing his hand with what little strength she had left. "You were always trying to protect everyone but yourself."
"Doc says they were poisoning you," Jax said, his voice hardening into steel. "We're leaving right now. All of us."

Doc Thomas stepped into the room, holding a wheelchair and a bag of clear fluids. "We have to move fast, Jax. The guards at the front will wake up soon, and when they do, Vance will know we've taken her."
Carefully, Jax lifted Sarah into his arms, feeling how light she had become, and set her down in the wheelchair. "Leo, hold her hand," Jax instructed. "We're getting out of this town tonight."
